"Beauty and the Sublime"
I have touched on the philosophy of ‘Kant’, ‘beauty and the sublime’ which has inspired me to start a series of paintings titled ‘Transcend’. Showing nature in which we cannot control, externally or internally.
My first painting in this series is named ‘Red Hill’. Here I try to capture a journey I took through the Bolivian Andes during an epic thunder and lightning storm. During this journey I had the overwhelming feeling of one-ness and self-forgetfulness. I feel touched to have had this experience. I wanted to create a painting to portray this journey, solely concentrating on colour and texture. I did not want to create any iconic images but mountains kept appearing through the paint, so ultimately I let the painting take its natural course.
I feel for my next painting I shall aim for the abstract, to portray the self-forgetfulness which I felt during my experience, removing images familiar to myself. ‘Red hill’ was only possible due to my focusing on my conceptual development, learning about new philosophies and artistic concepts, which has resulted in a deeper understanding of my work and the direction in which I am headed.
