This project used the mechanical creations of Leonardo DaVinci as a catalyst for both ideas and process. I was charged with creating a DaVinci-esque mechanism based on the principles of both counterweight and cantilever. This structure utilizes both the drastic differences in the weights of the woods that are used (Ipe and Poplar) as well as a hinge and steel rod weight system paired with the sliding cantilever extension to create different moments of balance depending on the configuration of the elements. All of this is held together with a steel chord tension system that can retract to change the angle of the hinged weight members. The unit extends to a total of six feet, balancing on two feet that are only a square inch in surface area.
